In the early hours one morning in Hobart, Tasmania, a young Chinese student was picked up by two strangers. They took her to their apartment a few suburbs away and murdered her. The horrific act shocked our small city and spread fear through the overseas student community.
But the death of Zhang Tina Yu, while an act of evil, was the catalyst for positive change. A community mobilised to speak up against fear and intimidation, against racism and violence. It mobilised to show that Hobart and Tasmania welcome diversity in all of its forms. This mobilisation took the form of World Party, a multicultural extravaganza of food, music, dance and much else besides. The brainchild of Hobart-based QC Stephen Estcourt, the inaugural World Party was held in 2010. In 2012 it was held again, only this time bigger, better and bolder.
I was privileged to be a photographer at both events. I have produced a beautiful photo book and an 18-month calendar of the 2012 event which are now on sale at Momento. All proceeds from sales go to the Migrant Resource Centre, a not-for-profit organisation which supports migrants and refugees in Tasmania. Momento has generously supported this initiative.
